“I know for sure that loves save me and that it is here to save us all.” “Life loves to be taken by the lapel and told: “I’m with you kid. “Never make someone a priority when all you are to them is an option.” It has caused a lot of problems in this world but it has not solved one yet.” “You can’t really know where you are going until you know where you have been.” “We may encounter many defeats but we must not be defeated.” “Be present in all things, and thankful for all things.” “There is no greater agony than bearing an untold story inside you.” “If you have only one smile in you give it to the people you love.” “I’ve learned that making a living is not the same thing as making a life.” “If you find it in your heart to care for somebody else, you will have succeeded.” So, to be bodacious enough to invent ourselves is wise.“Ask for what you want, and be prepared to get it.” If a person does not invent herself, she will be invented. “Each of us has that right, that possibility, to invent ourselves daily. You can ask forgiveness of others, but in the end the real forgiveness is in one’s own self.”Ģ1. So you say to people who you think you may have injured, ‘I’m sorry,’ and then you say to yourself, ‘I’m sorry.’ If we all hold on to the mistake, we can’t see our own glory in the mirror because we have the mistake between our faces and the mirror we can’t see what we’re capable of being. But once you do and you see the mistake, then you forgive yourself and say, ‘well, if I’d known better I’d have done better,’ that’s all. “It is very important for every human being to forgive herself or himself because if you live, you will make mistakes – it is inevitable. “I’ve learned that making a “living” is not the same thing as making a “life.”Ģ0. I want to experience every good thing.”ġ9. “History, despite its wrenching pain, cannot be unlived, but if faced with courage, need not be lived again.”ġ8. Here are some of her thoughts to take to heart:ġ. An authentic life implies consistency in both our personal and professional lives. She influenced us with her words because they were not only well-chosen, they were well-lived. If experience is the best teacher, her wisdom, understanding, compassion and humanity was born from a life filled with both hardship and joy. Her indomitable spirit inspired and motivated us all to not only be the best versions of ourselves that we could be, but in turn, to inspire that in others whose lives we’ve touched. As an advocate for equality, she spoke not only for her people, but for all people. She was more than an actress she was a singer whose lyrics encouraged us to live our hopes and dreams. She was more than a writer she was a teacher. Maya Angelou was an extraordinary force of nature and although her song has been silenced, her words and her legacy will continue to speak, not only in her writings, but in the hearts and minds of generations to come. One of the most authentic voices for humanity died yesterday. “If you have a song to sing, who are you not to open your mouth and sing to the world?”
